With the recent release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I,” Harry Potter mania is back in full swing. As the film’s stars walk the red carpets, it is hard to imagine anyone else playing the principal roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. However, in reality, the film almost went without one of the famous trio: Emma Watson.
Watson seriously considered backing out her role as Hermione in the Harry Potter films when her contract came up for renewal in 2006. Rumors circulated that summer claiming that the actress was contemplating giving up her role in the films. Recasting Hermione Granger would have been a shock to fans and a significant change in the movies.
The reason Miss Watson considered leaving Harry Potter behind? Her education. The young actress said that the schedule producers gave her for the remaining films left no time to prepare for her A-levels (exams British students take at the end of their high school careers) and attend college the next year.
Emma said that attending college was of the utmost importance to her, and she did not want to delay her studies for a few years while filming and releasing the remaining Harry Potter films. After speaking with producers, Miss Watson’s insistence that education must come first got her exactly what she wanted: they moved the entire Harry Potter filming and release schedule around her exam dates and university calendar.
Ultimately, Emma Watson’s focus on academics and hard work in high school landed her a spot at Brown University, an elite Ivy League school in Rhode Island. She is currently a sophomore at the university and majoring in history. Watson says she chose to attend college because she wants to pursue her passion for learning, develop new interests, broaden her mind, and learn more about life in general. She is also ready to “take a break” after ten years of non-stop work on the Harry Potter films.
Miss Watson’s commitment to her education makes her a strong role model for young women across the globe. The young actress could have moved to Hollywood and taken on countless high-paying films after the Harry Potter series, increasing her fame and wealth exponentially. However, she understands the value of education and cares enough about herself to pursue a college degree. While acting is likely still in her future, one thing is certain: Emma Watson will have no lack of job opportunities when she graduates, and her future certainly looks very bright.
