A veterinary technician is a person who has completed a minimum of 2 years program in an institution certified according to the standards set by the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Committee. The person should have also passed an examination prescribed by the Veterinary Technician Education and Activities. There are various vet tech schools in Montana certified that offer veterinary training programs.
The application is held annually on 30th September, with $50 license fee, $150 application fee, $21 criminal background check. Before applying all applicants should have read, Title 32 Chapter 71-A of the Montana veterinary practice act. This states the duties of a veterinary technician and animal’s health assistant. It states that:
“An animal health assistant may, under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian or a registered veterinary technician, perform duties of an animal health care nature. The duties do not include diagnosing, making prognoses, performing surgery, interpreting laboratory tests or prescribing or initiating treatment. A veterinary technician registered in the State of Montana may perform, under the supervision and direction of a licensed veterinarian, such duties as drug administration, nursing care, x-ray film exposure and processing, bandage changes, dental prophylaxis, restraint, blood and fecal collections, diagnostic laboratory procedures and other duties the supervising veterinarian or the board may prescribe by rule, consistent with this chapter, except no one but a veterinarian may diagnose, make prognoses, prescribe or initiate treatment or surgery or perform surgery.”
Then you must contact the Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) directly in order to register for the VTNE examinations. Examination and application dates are available.
License renewal is on 30th September annually and a $50 renewal is required, a fine of $50 is applied on licenses renewed after the date has expired. The department must verify that you have met all the conditions for your license to be renewed.
