So you have a heart of gold, a way with animals and a desire to help, these are the three prerequisites for being a Minnesota vet tech and obtaining a Minnesota vet tech license. A Minnesota vet tech is someone who assists the veterinarian in the daily running of the office. Becoming a veterinarian technician requires a vet tech license which can be obtained by attending a two year Minnesota vet tech school and graduating with a diploma or an Associate Degree. About one third of the classes can be taken online, but the other courses are hands on and must be taken in the laboratory or the clinic at the physical school.
After receiving your diploma, you must register for the Veterinary Technician National Exam and take the Minnesota vet tech license requirements exam. To register, contact the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association or through email. The exam and registration are state required, which means that the applicant must take the exam in the state where they work.
Since a vet tech is responsible for a variety of duties, including both administrative and clinical, both are taught in a Minnesota vet tech school. Administrative courses such as Bookkeeping, Accounting, Insurance, Scheduling and Management are common. For the clinical courses, Animal Husbandry, Parasitology, Animal Diseases, Animal Handling and Restraint, exotic pets, and Emergency Care are included and then the veterinarian office will focus either on the smaller animals, or the large animals, like cows and horses. Most vets prefer one or the other, but the student will be prepared for all.
A Minnesota vet tech school can be found in many areas of the state. Check and make sure the are accredited with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
