Of all the skills necessary to be a gunsmith, possibly the most important, and yet the most basic skills that every gunsmith should have, are how to clean and lubricate a gun. Keeping a gun clean and lubricated will not only extend its life, but will help maintain it in proper working order.

Routine maintenance is critically important for the smooth functioning of a revolver. Hi, I’m Larry Potterfield with MidwayUSA, and I would like to show you how to clean and lubricate this Smith and Wesson. Start by completely dissasmbling the gun. Now degrease the inside of the frame using the Insta-Clean. And scrub it out with a nylon brush. We’ll clean each part prior to lubrication. Apply a drop of oil to all the contact surfaces on the hammer. And don’t forget to oil the hammer pin. Now we can clean and lubricate the trigger along with the hand and the trigger pin. Wipe a little oil on the rebound slide and reinstall it. Remember to clean and lubricate the side plate. The yoke will require a bit of attention as well as the extractor rod before final assembly.
