Good communication skills are essential in most lines of work. However, if you’re not a good listener or rarely make eye contact with those you’re speaking with, then it may be time to make some changes. When you take steps toward improving your communication skills, you are sure to see positive results right away, whether you’re taking classes at technical schools, or interviewing for jobs.
So what can you do? Well, try starting with these three steps:
- Read more – In school, you’re almost always required to be reading something. However, when you’re no longer being graded, it can be easy to stop making visits to the local library. The only problem is, when you stop reading on a regular basis, you end up missing out on valuable learning opportunities.
Not every book is going to be a literary work of art, but that doesn’t mean they can’t provide you with added experience. Watch how a writer forms sentences. Discover words you may have never heard of and build your vocabulary. See written examples of what works and what doesn’t so you have a better grasp on the English language. It can give you a lot more tools to use in your communications arsenal.
- Make eye contact – Have you ever had a conversation with someone who’s looking every which way but at you? Annoying, isn’t it? Don’t be one of those people. Whether you’re talking to a friend, a boss or a customer, making eye contact will show them that what they have to say is indeed more interesting than your shoelaces.
Not only does making eye contact make other people feel appreciated, but it can also change the way others view you. If you’re always turning away, some may think you’re shy, scared or just plain weird – none of which will be much help when it comes time to look for a job.
- Reevaluate your tone – This one requires some introspection, but it’ll be worth it in the end. When you talk to your friends and family, listen to yourself. Do you talk too fast? Are people always asking you to repeat things because you’re too quiet? Does it take a while for you to answer questions because you’re unsure of yourself? Any one of these things can be standing between you and your goal of becoming a better communicator, so slow down, speak up and become more confident in what you have to say.
Of course, these are just three steps you can take, but any one of them may help you improve your relationships with other people.
