Organize your best photos and attend a National Portfolio Day event

If you’ve got a knack for taking amazing pictures without any formal training, just think of how great your shots will look after you’ve taken some courses through photography schools. However, if you’ve got your sights set on a career as a professional shutterbug, you’re not going to want to enroll in any old photography school – you want a program that can take your skills to the next level.

So how exactly do you find the photography school that’s right for you? Well, when you start searching the internet for programs, see if any institutions that offer photography programs also happen to be hosting National Portfolio Days in the near future.

What are National Portfolio Days?

Since 1978, the National Portfolio Day Association (NPDA) has helped members of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design host National Portfolio Days, according to NPDA’s website. These events are very similar to college fairs, except they exist solely to serve the needs of creative students with their sights set on artistic programs.

What happens at these events?

Much like a college fair, you’ll have a chance to speak with representatives from specific schools. This allows you to learn everything you ever wanted to know about an institution so you can make the best decision as to where you go to expand your knowledge and skills in the realm of photography.

Portfolio Days are free of charge, open to the general public and do not require anybody to register beforehand. But if you’ve got an interest in attending one of these events, you’re going to want to prepare, rather than simply strolling in off the street.

How do you get ready for a National Portfolio Day?

It’s called National Portfolio Day, which means you’re not going to want to leave the house without a portfolio filled with your best photographs. The NPDA website says you can bring anything from finished pieces to works still in progress. No matter what you choose to carry, make sure school representatives can pick up your pictures and investigate the skill on display in each one. This means you shouldn’t go out of your way to make your pieces look extra fancy. Let the work speak for itself, not the expensive frame you have placed it in.

What should you expect?

Get ready to have your work critiqued by the school representatives you meet. Are these individuals out to crush your dreams? Of course not. Do they want to give you constructive and honest feedback? Definitely. So go into the National Portfolio Day event with an open mind and you may leave with a better sense of your talents, as well as the type of photography schools that would be best for you.

Not your only option

Still looking for that ideal photography school? The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) hosts Performing and Visual Arts College Fairs each year, according to the NACAC’s website. If one of these events is being held in your local area, it might be worth visiting to see if you can gain any information on a few other photography programs.
