New York Veterinary Technical Schools:

Veterinary technicians and technologist are trained individuals who play an important role in assisting veterinarians. Technicians and technologists perform medical tests to assess an illness or injury of a pet. They work under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian, and may work at vet clinics, animal hospitals and other places. It takes two to four years to become a certified veterinary technician or technologist, but hands on training and certification is provided by technical and vocational schools.

Career Opportunities & Compensation in New York

In 2010, there were about 80,200 individuals employed as veterinary technicians and technologists. These trained professionals worked in private clinics, hospitals, zoos, boarding kennels, animal rescue centers and other similar places. Many places provide animal care 24 hours per day, so technicians and technologists may be scheduled to work nights, weekends and overnight. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there will be a 52% job increase in this career area between 2010 and 2020. This is much higher than the national average for job increases. The pet population is consistently growing, so this may be the reason for the continuous jobs. In New York, the large population can attribute to many opportunities for veterinary technicians and technologists. To begin working in this field, students must pass an exam and become registered, licensed or otherwise certified according to state laws. In 2010, the BLS stated that the annual median wage for veterinarian technicians and technologist was $29,170 per year. The top ten percent of workers in this career field made over $44,000 annually in 2010.

With the proper training and certification, students can go directly from technical or vocational school into the work force. There are many opportunities all across New York state for veterinary technicians and technologists. These jobs offer students a great chance to begin their careers working with animals.
